First of all, as always thank you for checking in. We know how it is when there is so much to do and you just want to chill. To keep it REAL, that’s why we do what we do to make money in the first place; because we just want to chill… one day. We get it, things need to get done; but how do you get things done when you just don’t feel like it? It starts with the right mindset. If you have the right mindset, your body will follow. I feel you though, it can be hard to get into that “right” mindset when you don’t feel like it, but we got you.
Let’s keep it REAL, we all need some type of motivation to get things done, especially what we don’t want to do. Gratification is the reward you give yourself after you’ve done something. Whatever it is, it can be used as motivation to help you get things done. The practice of delayed gratification is holding yourself accountable to doing what you need to do then rewarding yourself afterward. Your present-self sacrifices that feeling of gratification for the future-self. The whole point of doing this is to get what you need to get done now, so you can enjoy yourself later. Let’s keep it REAL, this mindset is slept on because people are so eager to reward themselves right away. The problem with this is that you might not get done what you need to get done because you’re too busy rewarding yourself. Another issue is that your future-self still has to get the work done eventually anyway, and since time doesn’t rewind or stop, your future-self will eventually be your present-self.

Delayed gratification is a habit that will always pay off in the future. Think about money. If you make it a habit to save the money that you would’ve spent on new clothes, you’ll eventually have more money (to get better clothes). We get it. Delayed gratification is tough on your present-self, but patience is a powerful virtue to master. To keep it REAL, patience and belief are the qualities that separate the successful from the unsuccessful. When you believe something’s going to happen, patience is just trusting the timing of when it happens.
Patience is an action. If you trust the process, you will act like it. You will study for that test because you trust the process. You will get up early and workout because you trust that your hard work will pay off. Patience can be used as a tool that can work for you on your journey to success. The longer you train or study, the bigger the reward will be when it’s time. We can’t control the timing, but we can control our preparation for when that time comes… and when it does, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor.
The bigger rewards come to those who are patient. They understand that if they work hard one day at a time, eventually success is inevitable. Think about how long it takes to build a mansion. It takes a while for a reason. The construction workers have to lay one brick at a time (or stone or whatever). Not only that, but they have to lay that one brick down perfectly, otherwise, it could ruin the entire structure. The point is that each day is like a brick. The only thing you can control is how perfectly you lay down that one brick. The mansion you eventually want will take a while, but when you stay the course and take it one brick at a time, you will definitely thank yourself later when you see how great your mansion (life) is.

As a student, think about walking that graduation stage, regardless of your level of education. That moment when they call your name, and you receive your diploma will be the gratification you had to wait for during that entire journey. It will be worth it. You’ll have worked so hard for something that will last the rest of your life. You’ll look back and appreciate all of the hard work you put in to get to that point. This is what we want you to feel, but more importantly, this is the moment we want you to always look forward to and prepare for when you don’t feel like doing something. Get it done to the best of your ability now so that you can chill and thank yourself later.
Let’s keep it REAL, your future-self is the person who deserves gratification the most. Think about it… your future-self deals with all the annoying bricks you must build daily. Your future-self is on the ride with you the entire time. That’s the person who, when it’s all said and done, you should be doing it for (along with your family and our culture of course). The “You’ll Thank Yourself Later” mindset is meant for your future-self. That’s the person who will appreciate the beautiful mansion because that’s the person who was able to learn the lessons necessary to fully appreciate the gratification.

Again, thank you for taking the time to learn about this mindset that hopefully will change the game for you. As a small thank you for reading this far, here’s something else you can take with you. Let’s keep it REAL, we know some of you just can’t be patient long enough. You just can’t wait that long for some gratification. We get it. We don’t want anyone to feel like they need to torture themselves just to get something done. The motivation could easily be something other than that end goal. Get creative.
For example, after working out, you could decide to treat yourself to some fruit (the healthy candy) or a smoothie. It’s a win-win. You got your workout in, and you get some gratification after. Let’s use homework as another example. For younger students, you could use your favorite TV show as a small reward for getting your work done before it starts. For college students, you could even use partying as an incentive. Either for getting your homework done before you go out that night or decide on a specific grade you want to get on a test. If you get it, go turn up! If not, you might need to delay your gratification a little longer. The point is to think of smaller rewards that will motivate you to do what you have to do. Not only that, but the rewards could actually be something productive, like the fruit smoothie after the workout idea… healthy and tastes great!
