REAL Talk #7

Yo! What’s up? We hope all is well. Let’s keep it REAL, fear dictates a lot of decisions we make. It’s a part of life in a way that, just like The Secret, can be used how we decide to use it. Like always, we need to define fear. When you think about fear, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? We think of fear as an unwanted expectation; because the funny thing is, whatever we are scared of is never actually present at that time. It’s the possibility of what we think will happen in the future. Think about someone that is scared of heights; they’re scared of the possibility of falling… but they haven’t actually fallen.

Think about it… when someone sneaks up on us and scares us, at the moment it’s not really their actions that scare us (that’s called being surprised); it’s the “fight or flight” gut-reaction of what’s to be expected. When we are scared of other, more long-term things, like public speaking for example, the same rules apply. You might get extremely nervous and fearful of the audience, but nothing has happened the way your fear is expecting it to.

This is a little different with scary movies. When you go see a scary movie, you’re already anticipating that you’ll be scared during the movie so you’re a little more prepared. That’s the thing… you chose this fear. Why? Why do some of us choose scary movies? Maybe because deep down, we want to be scared, but just on our terms. We enjoy the thrill of “the jump” when the villain attacks when we least expected it. Some of us go to haunted houses, willingly. Maybe we want that feeling of fear to test ourselves in a way. We put ourselves up against fear in these situations, but why not do the same thing with your goals?

Let’s keep it REAL, if we think deep enough, we would eventually come up with goals that scare us. What if we actually decided to face these fears, just to see if we could conquer them? As an example, how would you go about creating generational wealth (so maybe $1,000,000,000?) for your family? It would be a long process, but eventually a path would get created. Since we all have to take it one day at a time, we sometimes lose patience because our goals seem so far away. We then start to reconsider our paths, simply because we fear the unknown. What if we embraced the unknown? To keep it REAL, the unknown is only scary if you don’t have belief in yourself and belief in the fact that whatever life throws your way, you’ll take those experiences and use them as fuel to continue the journey. There’s more excitement in the process when fear is turned into an opportunity for growth.

This next sentence is as REAL as we can get: When a fearful situation presents itself, two things are going to happen; you’re either going to live through the situation… or you’re not. While that might sound corny, the truth is that if you live to see another day, you can use your past experience as a learning opportunity that allows you to grow. By doing this, you’ve essentially conquered your fear. This feeling becomes addicting when you put yourself in those situations, especially when you prepare. When you leave the movies, there’s that rush that makes you want to go see another one (at least when the movie is good). That’s how your life can be when you use those learning opportunities to your advantage.

Thanks again for checking in! As always, we appreciate it. We want to leave you with a final quote about fear from the movie, After Earth, which we highly recommend by the way:

“Fear is not REAL. The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is the product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. That is near insanity.”

Keep it REAL.
