REAL Talk #34

We hope you are having a great fall! In education, the fall semester, especially around these October and November months can be challenging. There are midterms, papers, exams and homework assignments that can start to pile up before the winter break hits in December. Let’s keep it REAL, a lot of students (& teachers) can start to feel the burnout happening around this time. We get it. This is also around the time when the weather begins to change, especially for those east coast residents, who might start bringing out those winter jackets around this time. It’s definitely The Grind, but we wanted this post to simply be a reminder that YOU GOT THIS!

There will be those days when you start to feel overwhelmed or possibly even discouraged because of all the work you have to do. First, we want to let you know that it is okay to feel this way. Your mental health is extremely important and with that being said, we wanted to remind you of the power of self-affirmations or positive self-talk. This is one of the most powerful ways you can get out of a slump. Unfortunately, days of self-doubt or simply feeling down are inevitable. We all have to learn to accept that these days will come, but when they do, we can find ways to gather our thoughts and remind ourselves of some positivity that we desperately need during these times.

A good first step would be to take a look at our Law of Attraction, which gives some good advice about the power of positivity, as well as provides a good read in The Secret, which has some great reminders of positive self-talk that you can do while you’re reading the book! It’s important to understand that positivity is simply a choice that we all can make. Yes, to keep it REAL, sometimes it will be hard to find positive words or things to think about when you’re going through a slump, but eventually you’ll realize that every “negative” situation can be reframed into a positive one.

Another great strategy to do when you’re feeling down is to break out a pen and some paper (Yes, the old fashion way) and write down 5 things you’re thankful for. This exercise is so valuable because it gives you a chance to pause and reflect on the positive things about your life, which should be a great distraction from the negative situation that you’re going through. Another thing you can do after you’ve got your 5 things would be, as we’ve previously mentioned, to literally write down how you will reframe the current “negative” situation into a positive one. When you do this, you’ll realize that you can grow from the current situation, whatever it is. Remember our post about Recognizing Growth? You can only grow when you’re uncomfortable. Use each “negative” situation to your advantage by figuring out how you will grow from it. We promise that you won’t regret this easy, simple exercise.

We don’t want to overwhelm you with more to read, so we’ll bring our post to an end. We just wanted to remind you of the power of positivity that you possess with the use of self-affirmations. You are as powerful and strong as you want to be. Yes, there will be those days of uncertainty and doubt, but you have the tools to make your life as positive as you want it to be and it all starts with perception. We hope this post gives you some confidence as you finish out this year strong and with purpose. Remember, there is always something to be thankful for and there is always something positive about every situation.

Keep it REAL.
