REAL Talk #36

What’s up? We appreciate and value your time. We want this post to focus on efficiency when it comes to your work ethic. We hope you decided to check in on this post because you want to find ways to truly utilize your time in a way that maximizes your full potential, without draining you and decreasing your motivation.

Let’s keep it REAL, working hard is ultimately what will dictate your success or not. It is a key ingredient and without it, you leave your fate in the hands of external factors. We want to make that point clear. Although, there’s a difference between working hard and working too hard. Yes, you can work so hard that you lose all hope and motivation toward achieving your goals.

There is light at the end of the tunnel!

The problem with most of us is that when we don’t see the light right away, we try to find alternative routes, but these routes are not always the best way to go about achieving our goals and dreams. Life is a tunnel, not a maze. Yes, there are times when obstacles will get in the way, but that should not get you off your path. These obstacles are simply learning opportunities, that’s it. They should not derail you or alter your path; they are meant to help you appreciate the path and everything that comes with it.

The fastest way to get from point A to point B is a straight line. Let’s keep it REAL, sometimes we can make life more difficult than it actually is. We let our minds interfere with that fastest route with negative thoughts, self-doubt and fear. Let us remind you that fear is based on circumstances that currently do not exist. Positive thoughts lead to positive experiences, or the light; negative thoughts lead to the opposite, where we end up lost in a dark place.

Working smarter means understanding that work is necessary, however, it’s the quality of work  that truly matters the most. You don’t need to put in a ton of hours on something that could take less time. You don’t need to overdo a workout because you want to be stronger right away. The secret to working smarter is all about consistency. A great book that supports this idea is Atomic Habits by James Clear. We’ve cited this book before because of its power and value when it comes to being consistent about what you want to achieve in life. Here, we want to promote the idea of keeping a daily schedule that outlines the specific amount of time you will perform a habit.

If you put in work more often, you don’t have to spend as much time on the work you put in on a specific day. A great example of this is preparing for an exam. If you know the exam is two weeks away, you can decide to study for 30 minutes each day leading up to the exam. This is a much better way to work instead of studying the last two days or the night before, where you have to cram a lot of information into your brain in a short amount of time. Another example is completing a class project. Why wait until a few days before the due date? You’re causing yourself to stress out, when you can alleviate that stress by choosing to work on the assignment weeks before it’s due. Not only can you work less on the assignment each day, but you can also give yourself time to review and reflect on the assignment in case you want to make any changes.

This idea of working smart applies to all aspects of life. We hope this post helped you realize the power of working smarter, instead of harder to achieve your goals. This concept is great for students, educators, athletes, etc. who are motivated to succeed. Keep your motivation by working smarter and more efficiently, instead of harder and beating yourself up mentally and physically. Thank you for taking the time to check-in. As we said when we started, we value your time and you should too!

Keep it REAL.
