My name is Mahdi Shah. My parents were born in Pakistan and they moved to the U.S. so that my sister and I could pursue education. We were both born in the U.S. I am part of the Gateway to Success (GTS) program at DeSales University. GTS was program to help students get ready for college. During my time in this program I have learned 7 highly effective habits that will keep me going for the rest of my life; being proactive, putting first things first, beginning with the end in mind, seeking to understand then to be understood, thinking with a win-win mindset, synergizing and sharpening my skillsets. These 7 habits that I learned through reading the book “The 7 habits of highly effective teens” by Sean Covey, attending the GTS Summer Program and applying everything I learned to my first semester of college has helped me develop such a positive growth mindset. The kind of mindset where I feel like I can do anything if I practice and put my mind to it.
As of now I am a first-year Law and Societies Major from Trexlertown Pennsylvania in my spring semester of college. I am on an unwavering resolve arc on gaining as much leadership experience as I can while I am still in my undergraduate years. I am a member of the Black Student Union and during my time at this organization, it has opened my eyes to a lot of the distressing issues that we are facing collectively. I feel like different people champion different causes but for me, I see commonality. Whether we are talking about gender inequality, racism, queer rights, indigenous rights or animal rights we are talking about the fight against injustice. We are talking about the fight against the idea that one people, one race, one gender or one species has the right to control, dominate, use and exploit another with impunity. I am also part of the Varsity E-Sports team at DeSales. Being a part of this team has taught me how to synergize and collaborate in groups as well as spread positivity in any environment that I am in.
There are many segments of the community that are overlooked and are not getting the help and attention that they deserve. For example, there elderly people who are getting scammed, overcharged and getting taken advantage of. There are people who have been arrested due to prejudice and are being put through the legal system due to misunderstandings or crimes that they did not commit. I want to become a lawyer to help these people who are in need of professional legal guidance and give all my clients the good representation that they deserve. I want to become a really good lawyer.
