Nessa Cartagena

I am from Bethlehem, PA and attended Liberty High school. Growing up, I learned the value of time and money very early. It was not because my parents taught me about money though, but instead I had learned from their mistakes when it came to credit cards and not having an emergency fund. I saw my Mom struggle and although I knew she did everything she could to give me a beautiful life, I knew if I wanted more for my future family, I needed to start saving for the future as soon as possible. I started working and saving my money when I was 14. My first job was as a hostess at a restaurant, but I worked other jobs in high school at Dunkin’ Donuts and as a server. I applied to every scholarship possible my senior year of high school because I knew that was going to be the only way I could afford college. I got asked by Kutztown University to come in for a full ride scholarship interview based on the information I provided about myself on my application and my chosen major. My public speaking teacher in high school, Mrs. Erdman, gave me the best advice beforehand. She said, “just be yourself!” That was the best advice I ever got and the best advice I could ever give. I ended up getting picked against other candidates for the full-ride scholarship to Kutztown University. A once in a lifetime experience to continue my education.

I am a recent graduate of Kutztown University’s Class of 2022. I graduated summa cum laude with my Bachelors of Science in Business Administration with concentrations in finance and personal financial planning. My senior year I interned with Northwrstern Mutual, a Fortune 100 company that takes a holistic approach to comprehensive personal, family and business planning, so that our clients can spend life living. Funny enough, I was introduced to the firm by my uncle. I was telling him what I wanted to do after graduation (become a personal financial planner) and he introduced me to his financial advisor, who recruited me to her office and the rest is history! I ended the internship as the #1 female intern in the eastern region and Top 5 intern in the nation. Since starting at Northwestern Mutual and during my senior year I have passed 4 license exams so that I can offer more planning for my clients and their needs.

I will be going full-time as a Financial Advisor on June 8th, 2022, and plan on sitting for the CFP (Certified Financial Planner) license exam in November of 2022. My goals in my first year full-time are to be able to impact 50 new individuals, families, and business owners. I hope to be introduced to 20 new people every month, because without introductions, I wouldn’t be able to make an impact. My mission is to continue to Empower, Educate, and Inspire everyone to take control of their financial future.
