Hunter Garretson

Hello, my name is Hunter Garretson and I come from the small town of Newcomerstown, Ohio.  In high school, I was always getting involved.  Athletically, I participated in cross country and track and field.  I was also involved in marching band and choir and was a crew member for our high school plays and musicals. Academically, I was in almost all the advanced classes my high school offered including AP Calculus.  While I always liked math from a young age, the teacher for both Pre-Calculus and Calculus was the teacher who solidified my love for mathematics.  This love for math pushed me to attend college to continue learning higher levels of math, and this leads me to where I am now.

Currently, I am in my fourth year at the University of Akron pursuing my degree in AYA math teaching.  AYA stands for adolescent and young adult and thus I will be able to teach 7th through 12th grade math.  This is the age where I really found my love for math, and it is my hope that I can show that love to my future students.  At the University of Akron, I am also a part of the William’s Honors College.   As I am in my last year of my undergraduate, I am also student teaching this semester where I am working with an outstanding mentor teacher and currently teaching Pre-Calculus under the guidance of my mentor teacher.  In addition to student teaching during the day, in the evenings I am at track practice as am a part of the University of Akron Track and Field team with my specialty event being the pole vault.

By the end of this school year, it is my goal to graduate with honors.  In addition, to keeping my academic at a high level, I would also like to perform at a high level on the track and qualify for the Olympic trial next summer and maybe even make it to Paris for the real deal.  After making my athletic career last as long as I can feasibly can, I will make my way back to the classroom and teaching.  It is my goal to impact students as much as my teachers impacted me, creating a collaborative and fun environment for learning both math skills but also problem-solving skills.  I want to be one of those teachers who makes a lasting, positive impact on my students, even if they are the fan of math that I am.  Thank you so much to REAL for giving me this honor and recognition.
