Jermel Wilkerson Jr.

Jermel Wilkerson Jr. is a 16 year old resident of Twinsburg,OH. The youngest and the tallest of six, beloved by his siblings. They share the responsibility of encouraging him to be the best version of himself, and consequently, he is known for being kind, well-rounded, and laid back.  In middle school, Jermel recalls his History, English and Math teachers being the most influential and instrumental to his growth as a student and a person. Their classes were fun and engaging, even during COVID. He was a member of the community swim team, school band, and was recruited to volunteer as a summer camp leader for the Twinsburg Recreation Center.

As a 9th grader, Jermel continued his musicianship by joining the school marching and concert bands as a percussionist playing cymbals. Last summer of 2023, he had the opportunity to attend the HBCU Tennessee State University Edward L. Graves Summer Band Camp in Nashville, TN. It was a lasting experience, and he is considering returning for another summer. Jermel also started his first job last summer—invited by his instructor to work there because of his character and how well he interacts with the other students in the classes. Jermel had volunteered at various events for the younger students and made a big impression on the master instructor. Jermel takes pride in leading the adult kickboxing class and “giving them a real workout.”

Now a sophomore at Twinsburg High School, Jermel has maintained a better than 3.5 GPA and has been recognized for his academic excellence. Digital Art and ASL (American Sign Language) are hands down his favorite classes, and he’s looking forward to taking both advanced levels as a junior. His club involvement includes Art Club, Dungeon & Dragons, and Kaleidoscope—a student program aimed at improving students’ sense of belonging in the school. He also recently joined the track team. Not yet sure which events he will compete in, he is enjoying the exercise and getting to know new students. Jermel is also passionate about drawing original cartoon characters, anime, and Taekwondo, where he will be testing for his first black belt really soon. Not a stranger to responsibility, Jermel assists his dad at church operating the sound and live streaming of morning worship.

Jermel is looking forward to finishing the school year strong and hopefully taking an anatomy class next year to improve his figure drawing skills and even starting his very own comic. His junior year will be the start of college tours, especially HBCUs with strong art/design and engineering programs.
